Humla Region Trek to Mt. Kailash

Mansarowara Lake Mt. Kailash

Because the Humla Region spans the present Nepal-China border and Mt. Kailash is in Tibet, this is a cross-border trek, a trek which has only been legally possible since 1963. Historically, Humla was part of the great Malla Empire whose administrative capital was Sinja near Jumla in Western Nepal. Prior to 1787, this empire included Jumla and Pursang, or Taklakot, and extended as far west as Googay, and the "Lost villages" of Toling and Tsaparang located in a remote Tibetan Valley to the north of Nanda Devi and Kamet Himal. Mt. Kailas, in Tibet, has always been a pilgrimage destination which even today is protected from the encroachment of the 21st century by its' remoteness and inaccessibility to modern means of conveyance. Humla's only significant export is raw salt which is sent to Tibet as it has been for centuries. Salt is no longer sent to the rest of Nepal in any quantity because of the ready availability of cheaper imported Indian salt. Taklakot, an important trading centre for the Humla region, is about a 15-day walk from Surkhet. Taklakot is an interesting cultural meeting point for foreign tourists, Nepali, Indian, Chinese, and Tibetan traders. It is also an important Chinese Army outpost.

Humla is Nepal's highest and most remote inhabited region, an area of considerable scenic beauty. The people of Limi and the upper Humla Karnali Valley are the Bhotias who are of Tibetan origin. They are allowed to cross the border freely in order to graze their flocks on the summer pastures of the Tibetan Plateau and trade with the Tibetans. Various treks are possible in the Humla region.
